Even though Construction Machines entered the state of Kerala, India about more than 4 decades from now, within last 20 to 25 years only it became more popular among retail customers. Mostly with the arrival of Backhoe Loaders, the industry witnessed a boom. In the initial years, JCB, CAT, Terex, L&T Case and the Indian industrial giant TATA in collaboration with the American John Deer to become TATA JD. Almost all these brand could mark their presence remarkably. JCB was still a few step ahead of the others. The global leader Caterpillar was outstanding in built quality. In India, being a developing country, running cost reduction is a prime concern for all retail owners. The spare cost of CAT really put Caterpillar a step behind in sales volume.

At the beginning, the machine population was really minimum and the industry confined to some rich class and premium contractors. They enjoyed a good returns from these machines too. Liberalization of banks in granting loan and the push for creating more sales by the manufacturers and dealers really played its role in creating an excessive volume for these machines. Still owning a machine was profitable.

In the year 2008 or so, government regulations put restrictions on the industry. The already created excessive volume of Construction machines, especially backhoe loaders has become more than the reduced available work volume. Most of the the people who owned these machines became part of bankruptcy. The people who survived really found it difficult repaying the bank loans they owed. Since the demand and supply ratio worsened, the unhealthy competition among machine owners  so increased that the rental rate really touched the ground and the running cost kept increasing.

This forced unhealthy competition leaving no place to stand for them really ruined the industry in the state and most part of the country itself. Some of them indulged in manipulation too. They replaced the hour meter with additional one  which read more than actual and by-passed the hour meter so as to run even after the engine is turned off. Also they used to run the machine at lower engine RPM to extend the operating hours. Anyway, the backhoe loader was the only machine commonly visible in the state until not more than a decade before.

The unhealthy competition least rental rate really put any major player in Construction Equipment Rental away from the industry. The industry still is a small scale one with retail owners with one or two machines in the state.

A decade from now, min excavators made its entry and replaced backhoe loader with more speed and accessibility to meet every customer to cater for their custom needs otherwise it had been a monopoly for backhoe loaders.
